Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of the Progressive International LKS-06 Lettuce KeeperCustomer Review: most versatile Summary: 5 Stars
I originally bought 3 lettuce keepers; this one, the Rubbermaid, and the Klip-It. I found they all had flaws subject to how they were used, but of the three this one was the most versatile. The shape of the Rubbermaid just doesn't lend itself to proper storage and seems more aimed at getting the consumer to buy more units as "stackables" to make up for this shortcoming. Additionally a normal size head of iceberg won't fit in it, only 1 or 2 very small heads or lettuces like boston or butter. The Klip-It really only holds Iceberg lettuce and requires the user to core the head; plus there's the "flying Klip" problem associated with the design. The Progressive has a detachable bottom which allows the unit to act as a colander when washing your produce though I think a regular pre storage wash in the sink is probably more efficient. It also is the only one with a venting system, which is only slightly helpful, but at least it's included. The real benefit of the Progressive (to me at least) is the shape and size, as it easily handles Romaine, carrots, leeks, celery, scallions, etc., as well as round head type lettuces. As a matter of fact, probably the best use it to store your vegetables in one or more of these and turn you fridge's vegetable tray over to lettuce exclusively. For example if you store a couple heads of Romaine and some greens (dandelion, beet tops, etc.), your best bet for freshness is to wrap them in a damp dish towel, store in your vegetable drawer and spray once a day with water, just like the supermarket types do. High water content vegetables (like lettuce) need moisture, but they also need (moist) air circulation which they're not going to get in a sealed container. So 5 stars for the least imperfect product.
PS: Of the negative reviews for this product several seemed aimed at leakage problems from the detachable top and bottom. They do take a little care in insuring secure attachment, but I don't consider this a fault, it's the nature of the material used. And while the product is advertised as dishwasher safe, I wouldn't advise it; particularly the high temp (sani cycle) type of dishwashing. I mean doesn't anybody use common sense anymore? You wouldn't put a plastic container in your oven at 225 degrees would you?
